Portland moves July 4th bash to Saturday

File under star-spangled bummer. Portland city officials have postponed Friday’s pops to Saturday. Tropical storm Arthur continues to barrel up the coast causing our Stars and Stripes Spectacular held on the Eastern Prom to go off a day late.

But not a dollar short. Though Mother Nature is a cruel and unpatriotic mistress this year.

The move means boats bobbing in Casco Bay and thousands of urbanites on blankets can celebrate without getting soggy. Same schedule applies. Pyrotechnics are set to blast off at 9:20 p.m. Parade and orchestra precedes.

Because “Overture to 1812” can be upstaged by a crashing summer thunderhead, even Boston did a switcheroo this year. The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at the Hatch Shell goes off at 8 p.m. tonight. But the Lockhart and co. show will be televised on the actual holiday.

Now where is the dark and stormy party Friday?
