Portland bakery declared one of the best in the U.S.

Tis’ the season for lists and pastries, pies and pie charts. We’ve checked this list twice and agree Standard Baking Co. in Portland is primo. TimeOut Magazine thinks so too and named the Commercial Street patisserie one of 16 best bakeries in America.

The 21-year-old French bake house, tucked underneath Fore Street restaurant, is in good company on this well-researched, tantalizing roster. Coming in at number three, between Tartine in San Francisco and Proof Bakery in L.A., “this charming bakery turns out far-ranging breads and pastries including French baguettes, German vollkornbrot (brown bread), Italian focaccia and more. Absolutely everything is divine; customers rave, in particular, about the chocolate rye cookies, the chocolate chip financiers and the morning buns,” the mag says.

Not sure what chocolate chip financiers are, but I’ll take three.

Seems Portland has been a bit listless lately (listicle fatigue is real) so we deem the Sweet 16 the last great shoutout of 2016 for Maine’s tastiest hub.

But don’t rush here for classic Christmas cookies, Buche de Noel or other pagan Yuletide classics. As the name suggests, Standard is a savory palace with a fresh bread focus. Gluten rich? You bet. See you in line.
